Welcome to Barefoot Daisy’s Blog, where I share behind-the-scenes stories of fire, dance, and the magic that happens when I bring my art to life. Today, we’re diving into what you need to know before booking a snake dancer—because when a live snake is involved, the performance isn’t just about the dancer; it’s about creating the right conditions for both the performer and the snake to shine. More Than a Prop—A Dance Partner When people see me perform with a live snake, they often assume it’s just an exotic prop. But here’s the truth: dancing with a snake is like working with an entirely separate performer—one with its own personality, preferences, and moods. Some nights, my snake flows with me effortlessly, mirroring my movements as if we’ve rehearsed a duet a hundred times. Other nights? Well, let’s just say my dance partner decides it’s time for an unscheduled break, and I have to adapt on the fly! Each snake I work with has its own unique temperament. Some are natural-born stars, comfortable with movement, music, and the energy of a crowd. Others prefer to be admired from a distance, making them better suited for meet-and-greet sessions rather than center stage. That’s why I always bring additional snakes—because just like dancers, they have their “on” and “off” days. Things to Consider When Booking a Snake Dancer Booking a snake dance performance is different from hiring a regular dancer. Here are a few key things to keep in mind: 1. The Snake’s Well-Being Comes First Snakes have specific care requirements, and if the conditions aren’t right, they won’t perform. Before confirming a booking, I always consider: • Shedding Schedule: A snake that’s about to shed won’t be in the mood to dance. • Feeding Time: Snakes need time to digest their meals, so performances can’t be scheduled too close to feeding. • Travel & Temperature: Snakes are cold-blooded and need a warm, stable environment. Outdoor performances in cold weather or direct sunlight may not be possible. If I turn down a booking or make special requests, it’s not me being picky—it’s about ensuring the safety and well-being of the snake, which should always be a priority when hiring a professional. 2. Themed Snake Performances & Choreography I offer themed snake dance performances that blend storytelling with movement. Some of my most requested acts include: • The Asian Lady White Snake Anime – Inspired by the legendary White Snake folklore. • Island Jungle Safari – A tropical jungle goddess performance. • Egyptian Wadjet – A tribute to the ancient serpent goddess of Egypt. • Bellydance After Dark – A sensual, shadow-and-light performance. • Loki (Viking Boho Style) – A fusion of Norse mythology and dance. Each of these acts includes floor work, so a proper surface (such as a rug or dance floor) is needed for safety and comfort. 3. Snake Performances Are Not for Every Event There are times when I have to decline a request—not because I don’t want to perform, but because my snake has diva standards (and rightfully so!). Here’s when a snake performance might not be the best fit: • The event is too loud or overstimulating. Fireworks, booming bass, or chaotic movement can stress the snake. • The temperature is unsuitable. If it’s too cold or too hot, I won’t risk my snake’s health. • The requested handling is unrealistic. If the vision involves unsafe poses or excessive handling, I’ll kindly suggest an alternative. These are concerns any professional snake dancer would have, so if I decline a performance, it’s because the situation isn’t ideal for the snake. Booking a Snake for Photo Shoots Snakes also make a stunning addition to photo shoots! Whether it’s a fashion editorial, a quinceañera, a mystical wedding, or a themed shoot, a snake adds an unforgettable visual element. Since snakes move at their own pace, patience is key. A photoshoot isn’t about posing the snake—it’s about working with its natural movements to create stunning, organic imagery. The Kahu Mindset: A Performer and a Guardian In Hawaiian culture, the word Kahu refers to someone who is a guardian or caretaker. That’s exactly how I see my role as a snake dancer. I am responsible for the well-being of my snakes, ensuring they are treated with respect in every performance. If an event, theme, or production doesn’t align with that respectful approach, I’ll kindly refer you to another performer who might be a better fit. Because when you book a snake dancer, you aren’t just hiring an entertainer—you’re welcoming another living being into your creative vision. A Fiery Snake CharmingWedding in The Florida Keys by Islamorada Barefoot Fire DanceHere’s a stunning example of dancing with a live snake! In this performance, Barefoot Daisy gracefully moves with Jax, a lively and curious companion, while wearing an elegant fire headdress. This unique fusion of bellydance, fire, and live snake movement was performed on the beach for a wedding couple who are also snake Kahus, making the experience even more meaningful. Key Destination Wedding and Events did an excellent job coordinating the perfect staging area, ensuring an enchanting atmosphere for this one-of-a-kind performance. In the background, my fire safety assistant remains ready and alert, demonstrating the importance of both artistry and safety in such an intricate act. Jax, though not my biggest snake, was full of energy and eager to explore, adding an interactive and organic feel to the dance. When working with live snakes, it’s essential to understand their behavior and ensure they feel comfortable in the performance environment. Combining that with the added element of fire requires careful planning, proper training, and a deep connection with both the fire and the animal. This performance is a perfect example of how cultural dance, fire flow arts, and the presence of live animals can come together to create a truly unforgettable experience for special occasions.
